Click hereOn June 5, 2025, Zoota Initiative for Development joined the Women's Rights Movement, organisations and community members in Arua City to march against sexual harassment in the workplace. The event was organised SIHA Network with support from the Women's Rights Movement of West Nile, West Nile Women's Network, and other partners.
Why We Marched
Sexual harassment in the workplace is a big problem in our community. Many women face unwanted touching, sexual comments, or pressure from bosses and customers. Some women stay silent because they fear losing their jobs. Others report the harassment, but see no action taken.
We marched to say this must stop. We want all women to work in safe environments where they are treated with respect.
Celebrating the SGBV Ordinance
The march was also a celebration. After years of advocacy, Arua City finally passed the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Ordinance in 2024. This new law is an important step forward because it;
a) Makes sexual harassment at work illegal
b) Protects women who report harassment
c) Punishes those who harass women
This victory shows that when we come together, we can create change.
Challenges We Still Face
Even with the new law, there is still work to do. Some people still believe that harassment is normal or that women should stay quiet. Some cultural practices also make it hard for women to speak out.
At the march, we talked about these challenges. We discussed how to change attitudes and create a community where women’s rights are respected.
Building a Strong Women’s Movement
This march was not just a one-time event. It was part of a growing movement for women’s rights in West Nile. We are working towards uniting women across the region to stand against harassment and discrimination, challenge harmful traditions that hold women back, educate men and boys about gender equality, and make sure the new law is enforced properly
What You Can Do
Change does not happen overnight. Everyone has a role to play.
Here’s how you can help to stop sexual harassment in the workplace;
✔ Speak up if you see harassment happening
✔ Support women who report abuse
✔ Educate others about women’s rights
✔ Join our movement to make West Nile a safer place for women
The march was a powerful moment for our community. It showed that we are serious about ending sexual harassment at work. With the new law and our growing movement, we are making progress. But we must keep pushing forward until all women can work without fear.
Together, we can create a West Nile where women are safe, respected, and equal.
