Click hereIn Arua District, many young people are facing challenges with substances like cigarettes, tobacco, and marijuana. This issue is affecting their health and futures.
Substance Use Among Youth
Recent studies highlight the extent of this problem:
• Tobacco Use: Approximately 26.9% of students aged 13-15 have tried smoking cigarettes, with 17.4% currently smoking.
• Marijuana Use: Among adolescent boys and young men, 11.6% reported using marijuana in the past year.
Health Challenges
Using these substances can lead to serious health issues:
• Respiratory Problems: Smoking can cause coughing, breathing difficulties, and increase the risk of lung infections.
• Addiction: Nicotine and other substances are highly addictive, making it hard for individuals to quit once they start.
• Mental Health: Marijuana use, especially at a young age, can affect brain development, leading to memory problems and decreased motivation.
Limited Access to Healthcare
One of the significant challenges in Arua is the limited access to healthcare services:
• Rehabilitation Services: The only government-owned rehabilitation center is Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, located about 10 km southeast of Kampala City, making it inaccessible for many in Arua.
• Local Healthcare Facilities: Many local clinics lack the resources and trained personnel to address substance use disorders effectively.
Community Impact
The rise in substance use among youth affects the entire community:
• Education: Students using substances are more likely to miss school and have lower academic performance.
• Economy: Health issues related to substance use can lead to decreased productivity and increased healthcare costs.
Moving Forward
Addressing this issue requires a collective effort:
• Education and Awareness: Implementing programs in schools and communities to educate youth about the dangers of substance use.
• Healthcare Investment: Improving local healthcare facilities to provide support and treatment for those struggling with addiction.
• Community Support: Encouraging open discussions about substance use to reduce stigma and promote healthy lifestyles.
